Natural treatments to help ease menopause symptoms.

menopause symptoms

Whether you’re going through the menopause right now, have pre-menopause symptoms or have gone through it, there are ways you can take control of your health and make your life easier.

You don’t have to put up with hot flushes and night sweats. There is a better way, that can include supplements, diet and lifestyle changes, and other changes you can make to enjoy better health.

Getting your hormones balanced is a great way to help your body prepare for menopause and it’s worth looking into at any point in your life, but especially if menopause is on your not-too-distant horizon.

Menopause can be an unpleasant time for some women, due to the many symptoms that can present themselves before, during, and after menopause. This includes things like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, headaches, aches and pains, and loss of libido.

The menopause is a natural stage in every woman’s life, not a stage of decline. No matter what age you are now, think of yourself at a crossroads: one path leads to health and well-being in your later life, the other to degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and type 2 diabetes. The first path requires conscious effort but deciding to take it may be the hardest part of the journey.

5 Tips for reducing menopause symptoms.

1) Dealing with Hot Flashes.

Depending on their severity and how much they affect your day-to-day activities, you can take several steps to help alleviate hot flashes. Begin with a commonsense approach. Some possible triggers of hot flashes are hot beverages, spicy food, warm air temperatures, stressful situations, alcohol, caffeine, and some medications.

If you can identify your own triggers, you may be able to avoid some hot flashes. Keep a diary to note which of these or other triggers were present before each hot flash. Review it each week to pinpoint the most common triggers.

During the day, dress in layers so that you can take off garments when needed. If possible, regulate the air conditioning and heat in your environment to accommodate your temperature changes. If you wake up hot at night, sleep in a cool room. Go to bed with a frozen cold pack under your pillow, and turn the pillow over when you wake up. Keep a change of nightclothes next to your bed so that you can change easily if you wake up soaked.

2) Taking  a daily ‘menopause’ supplement.

Many women don’t realize that most female sexual supplements actually include several ingredients known to provide positive effects on menopause symptoms and overall health. Most herbs that have shown to boost female libido also have several positive effects on menopause symptoms, and we did not overlook this fact when we created our Femestril formula. Many of our customers use Femestril specifically because it’s so helpful in treating their menopause symptoms.

In addition to boosting female sex drive, an herbal supplement like Femestril can also help to improve your cardiac and digestive health. When choosing a supplement for menopause, try and find a supplement that includes ingredients like Ginkgo Biloba and Ginseng. Ginkgo Biloba is an extract derived from the leaf of the Chinese ginkgo tree, and has been shown to treat antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction.

3) How to deal with vaginal dryness.

Treating vaginal changes. A simple vaginal lubricant such as Astroglide or Silk-E may help treat vaginal dryness. A vaginal moisturizer such as Replens may also be helpful. Estrogen treatments applied directly to the vagina in the form of creams, rings, and tablets are quite effective. Also, experts say regular sexual stimulation can help keep the vagina healthy by maintaining its elasticity.

See our article on the best female lubricants and how they can improve vaginal dryness while also boosting female libido and sex drive.

4) What can you do about mood swings?

Studies indicate that mood swings are more common during perimenopause, when hormonal fluctuations are most erratic, than during the postmenopausal years, when ovarian hormones stabilize at a low level. No direct link between mood and diminished estrogen has been proved, but it is possible that mood changes result when hormonal shifts disrupt the established patterns of a woman’s life.

These changes can be stressful and may bring on “the blues.” Mood swings can mean laughing one minute and crying the next, and feeling anxious or depressed. These changes are transient, however, and do not usually meet the criteria for a diagnosis of clinical depression, a more profound dysfunctional emotional state.

5) Insomnia

Disrupted sleep is a common complaint during menopause. Whether hot flashes during sleep cause sleep disruption is not completely clear. Some women report that they perspire so profusely that they soak the bed linens and wake up. Others sleep right through their hot flashes. At least one study showed that hot flashes disrupt the most restorative form of sleep, even if the woman doesn’t wake up.

Insomnia can also be a problem for women who don’t have hot flashes. Some women may have difficulty falling asleep, but a common pattern is to sleep for a few hours, awaken too early, and not be able to fall back to sleep. Whether sleep disruptions are due primarily to hormonal changes is currently unknown. Sleep cycles change as people age, and insomnia is a common age-related complaint. The problem is a troublesome one that can leave sleep-deprived women fatigued, tense, irritable, and moody. Insomnia is not a trivial matter, as sleep problems also have been associated with heart attacks and congestive heart failure.

As you can see, there are many tips to help reduce menopause symptoms – and many of them you can start right now in the comfort of your own home. Exercise, proper nutrition, and minor lifestyle changes can all result in a noticeable reduction in your menopause symptoms.

Menopause and female libido problems.

menopause and female libidoDuring the menopause transition, the physical effects of falling estrogen levels—including hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness—can undermine sexual motivation and drive. Although not directly related to menopause, the age-related decrease in testosterone may reduce desire in midlife women, as this hormone plays a role in women’s sex drive and sexual sensation. The precise role of testosterone in desire is complex, however, because low sexual desire in women has not been shown to be related to testosterone levels in scientific studies.

Also, some women who undergo an abrupt menopause (caused by removal of both ovaries or by chemotherapy), which leads to an immediate drop in both estrogen and testosterone, suffer a greater reduction in desire than women who experience natural menopause. Interestingly, other women in the same situation do not have a decrease in desire.

The loss of estrogen and testosterone following menopause can lead to changes in a woman’s body and sexual drive. Also, lower levels of estrogen can cause a drop in blood supply to the vagina. That can affect vaginal lubrication, causing the vagina to be too dry for comfortable sex — but there’s help for that. (see our female lubricants page).

As you can see, menopause can certainly have an impact on female libido, which can then affect your relationship. It’s important to note that these changes are usually temporary, and there are treatments that can help boost female libido before, during, and after menopause.
