This study was one of the biggest and most comprehensive study ever done on sleep and its effect on sexual function and enjoyment.

 

Researchers looked at data from 93,668 postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 79 in the United States. All were participants in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, a long-term research project established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

 

The women answered questions about their sexual function during the previous year and their sleep habits during the previous four weeks.

Overall, 56% of the women said they were somewhat or very satisfied with their sex lives, and 52% had had sex with a partner during the past year. About 31% of the women had insomnia.

The scientists discovered a link between the severity of insomnia and sexual satisfaction. Generally, women with worse insomnia tended to be less satisfied with their sex lives.

Women who slept less than seven hours a night were less likely to have sex with a partner. They also had less sexual satisfaction.

The findings “suggest the importance of sufficient, high-quality sleep for sexual function,” the authors wrote. We all know that sleep is important, but few of us realize how important getting good quality sleep – and enough of it – is, as it pertains to our sex life.

 


What does this study tell us?

The bottom line is this: sleep is good for sex!  The researchers made some interesting discoveries.

  • The longer women slept, the more sexual desire they felt the next day.
  • For women with regular partners, sleeping longer increased the likelihood of having sex the next day. Just one extra hour of sleep increased their chances by 14%.
  • Women who generally slept longer tended to feel more aroused during sex. (Arousal refers to the physical changes that happen when a woman is sexually stimulated, such as increased blood flow to the genitals and vaginal lubrication.)

The researchers concluded that shorter sleep durations and higher insomnia scores were associated with decreased sexual function, even after adjustment for potential confounders, suggesting the importance of sufficient, high-quality sleep for sexual function.
